Whew!
Maybe I should say, what a weekend! This story is not for the weak of stomach. It is for me & my records (since I can't seem to keep up with a baby book or any other type of journaling these days) So, turn back now - you've been warned!
It all started on Saturday night. Well, Saturday morning when I woke up to Kate covered in throw up. Her first. I spent the rest of the day horribly nauseated. We had already made plans to go out on a date that night, so even though I wasn't feeling great, we went anyway (can't pass that up!).
Saturday night was a little rough. I still didn't feel great & by that time neither did David. Then, at about 3 AM our power went out. Not the whole street or anything - just us. David spent the rest of the night trying to fix the breaker while I got up each time Kate cried just to make sure she didn't get sick again. (Thankfully she didn't! *sidenote* she had eaten A LOT the night before & I think just got a little too full, because she didn't have any other symptoms) Around 10 we decided we might as well head to church. So, we did, spent the rest of the afternoon calling David's electrician to come over (thank you!) and then hanging out at David's parent's house since Bethany was in town.
And that's just the beginning!
We went to bed glad that our electricity was on the the time being, knowing it would get fixed in the morning. About an hour later David told me he was feeling bad again (after feeling good all day). His fever was at like 101.5 & now his stomach hurt. By 1:30 he throwing up. My poor husband! There is nothing worse than a sick husband! They're the strong ones! So I spent the rest of the night getting a glass of water & a cold rag for him every few hours. (and checking on Kate too). At around 5:30, he was vomiting again, but this time he made the most scary noise after he did. He got back in bed saying that his side hurt. By 8 o'clock he was getting up (having not slept). When he did, he got sick again & really complained of his side hurting. I knew something was pretty wrong seeing as how he goes weeks without telling me things hurt usually.
I started making some phone calls. Did I mention Faber White is my hero?? He's in our small group & an ER doctor. I called his wife Meredith & told her what was going on. She passed the message along to Faber (who was ON HIS DAY OFF) and he told us it really sounded like David needed to be seen at the ER.
So, off I went, getting Kate's things together. Bethany B came right over to get Kate - told me to just pack her pajamas and not worry about her the rest of the day. What a blessing! I didn't have to tell her what to feed her, when for her to nap, etc. I knew I could just trust her completely with my baby girl!
I got David dressed & we headed to the ER. Faber met us there & just made the whole experience amazing! He explained things so my worried mind could understand, assured us that the surgeon on call was great, and definitely did not make us feel like an inconvenience since he was there, taking care of us ON HIS DAY OFF.
We spent the next four hours (no time in ER time) getting a CT scan, blood work, etc. David got some morphine & zofran & was feeling much better! They were pretty sure it was appendicitis & that we'd be headed for surgery soon, but we were just thankful he was in good hands. A few days of recovery & all would be better!
Turns out it was NOT APPENDICITIS!! He has a bad infection in his intestines & the bulging pain in his side is probably some torn muscles in his abdominal wall from when he was throwing up. (YIKES!) Dr. White gave him some mediciine & sent us home.
David's feeling much better now. Still some pretty good pain when he has to cough & it'll take a day or two to kick the infection, but I left that hospital so thankful. So thankful I had a healthy husband who spent most of his sick time telling me how sorry he was that I was having to do so much, and how thankful he was for me. So thankful that I was there only with a sick husband, not a dying one. So thankful that I wasn't there with my child. So thankful that I had friends who are like family to help us (and family who had already packed to get in the car and drive 5 hours to come help!). So thankful that in the grand scheme of things this was just a tough weekend. By the end of the week, we'll all probably be feeling good - sitting & enjoying our family & celebrating our Savior's birth. What a good reminder.
